During the second week of June, San Diego’s Longboard Grill played host to a slew of salty seamen when the Discovery Channel series “Deadliest Catch” selected the popular Pacific Beach hangout as the venue for its fifth season finale. The season wrap-up featured captains and crew swapping harrowing stories, downing beers and resting their sea legs as part of Discovery Channel’s four-part spinoff program “After the Catch.” The full episode is available here.
In addition to highlighting the Longboard Grill, Discovery Channel hired San Diego-based Andrus & Associates to handle lighting, grip and production support. As roundtable participants recounted tales of lost limbs, putrid smells and challenges on the high seas, crew members such as Chris Andrus worked to capture the sailors’ stories and ensure premium production quality.
"It was a challenging shoot, lighting a multi-camera roundtable discussion in a confined space,” said Lighting Director Chris Andrus. “But the entire crew lived up to the challenge and Discovery Channel was really happy with the results.”
“After the Catch,” airing this month on Tuesdays at 9 p.m., will also showcase SeaWorld, Belmont Park, the USS Midway, and local fishermen and surfers. Try and identify each of them in the video above.
